After the show we went to see today, which was amazing in itself, the kids had a workshop about playmaking with the webplay team and two of the actors... if you can imagine...

Everyone in the audience doing the sound effects of Central Park NYC. (We had wind, birds in the trees, cellphone ringing and horses... sprinkles and ice-cream condiments).

Kids in poses on stage being the scenery - trees, a dragon water fountain, a park bench, and ice cream stand and the Empire State Building in the background...

The children made all the choices for these elements as part of the playmaking process, and also the list of suggestions for the actors to choose from and improvise the play. In the end we had a snooty lady, trying to berate a 'dude' who had spray-painted the bench she sat on to chat on her cell phone.

"Oh, I think I hear my cell phone ringing!" (audience make sounds after some prompting). The two characters then had a verbal fight...

"Look at what you did to my Gucci skirt!"
"What are you doing on my sidewalk?"
"You spray painted the bench!"
"So what, man, I spray painted the bench, the trash can... the trees..."
"You're going to have to pay for my skirt."
"No way, dude!"
"You will or I'm calling the cops."

The woman then got herself an ice-cream from the ice-cream stand (cue audience sound effects as she puts on the sprinkles and the sauce) and in revenge for her "dissing" him, the guy ended up spray painting her ice-cream, which she then, in outrage, squished onto his head.

A moments surprised pause and then... "Wow... never had a woman do /that/ to me before..."
and that made him fall in love with her.

He then invites her on a date to a movie,

"How 'bout you and me, we go see a movie or some'n?"
"You and me? No way, girlfriend!" (Yeah, I know he's a guy and you know he's a guy, but... the woman was improvising, what can I say?) So, she of course refused, but he's not taking no for an answer, takes her by the hand and leads her off through the park, on the way noting, "Oh look, the Empire State Building," as such a throwaway line it was hillarious.

You probably had to be there to appreciate just how funny it was, because of course you add in the exaggerated American accents (The woman was more 'Valley Girl' than NYC, but the man was kinda Harlem way, I'd have said, not that I'm the expert on these things, but...), the kids all excited at being on stage, even if they are just 'scenery' and everything else. It was a cracking good time. A great end to the half term.
