Hi Cedargrove! Well met again. I just saw TDOS yesterday, a rollercoaster of a movie with no breathing, and then got to read your evaluation. I did comment to myself during the movie that it has a story of its own in the context of Tolkien's framework, and I think very skillfully fills in the gaps that foreshadow TLOTR. As The Hobbit had already been written when Tolkien developed the rest of the story of Middle Earth, he didn't have the luxury of going back and sticking in characters that later became important.

Like you, I wish the movie had spent more time in the Elven kingdom, but also in the forest, especially that part where the elves celebrate at night and then disappear as Bilbo gets near. Maybe the extended version has it. The barrel scene was shortchanged a bit, and how Bilbo actually discovers how they could escape. As for snoring elves--how rude! Hahahaha. But, were I to put this part of the story in a script, I may have made the same decisions on what to cut and how to present what happaned.

I did enjoy the movie very much, and I am planning to go back next week to see it again.
